Starbucks and Ubuntu

June 22, 2007 – 6:29 pm

I was just settling in at the fancy new Starbucks near my house to finish up my final article regarding my switch from Vista to Ubuntu when I notice a quote about ubuntu on my Starbucks cup. The word Ubuntu was even italicized… Is it a sign…or do I have Ubuntu on my brain?

Here is the quote:

“We will end poverty and stop HIV/AIDS within our generation when guided by African principles such as ubuntu that underscore our interconnectedness. With greater compassion for others, we would no longer accept hunger and disease as facts of life.” –Cedza Dlamini

Much deeper stuff than my new favorite OS :)

  2. I’m sorry but Ubuntu is CR*P…!
    It does not play mp3’s..
    It does not play DVDs
When you try to find out why, you get referenced to commandlines and having to download xine-lib etc etc (whatever that is).
Finally after MUCH searching it is discovered something called xine-ui can be installed from an app called ‘Adept’ that manages packages. You have to download lots of stuff to make this happen.
    HELLO PEOPLE!
This is NOT the kind of usability or lack of it that converts windows users into linux users….
My new clean installation also does not display the screensaver (only a blank screen), it could not play SimCity 3000 that I downloaded, the networking was thoroughly confused about my wireless and wired connection being connected at the same time and after disconnecting one, the other stopped working etc etc. I was refused to be allowed to login as root (they have ‘conveniently’ disabled this option).
This is linux trying to be windows by trying to copy all the CR*P instead of all the good stuff….
Sorry guys. neeeext… I’m switching to RedHat Fedora
And if anyone is wondering, I am a systems administrator, I work with linux daily and I do know what xine is but the average new user definetly does NOT. I seriously do not see why everyone is raving about this crappy Ubuntu.
    Rubbish rubbish rubbish
