Basic Negotiating

Negotiation is like sales, it is a part of all human interaction but not always recognized as such. For those that are in committed relationships, you may have become a master negotiator without even realizing it. Following are some elemental ideas that will help you get prepared for a negotiation session.

There are three main functions that are involved in all negotiations:

1. The negotiation itself

2. Tracking the progress of the negotiation

3. Making a final decision

Before going into a negotiation, the following steps must be completed:

1. Create a clear definition of the desired outcome.

2. Ensure that the outcome you have defined is feasible.

3. Think of all possible arguments the other side will use and make sure you have an answer for each one. You may want to engage in a brainstorm with others to help identify the arguments.

4. Think of what the other side’s desired outcome is and think of ways to create a win-win situation.

5. Be sure to get adequate rest before the negotiation session.

6. Dress appropriately and comfortably. You want to do what ever you need to do to increase your comfort and confidence.

7. Create a mindset where you are assuming that the negotiation will last long term. Do not appear to be rushed.
