Using Digg.com On Your Pocket PC
July 24, 2007 – 3:56 amWhen I am not hacking, I’ll likely be either reading, thinking or entertaining myself on Digg.com. When I’m on the road, my xv6700 Pocket PC keeps me connected to the Internet. While there is DiggRiver.com to make viewing the stories easy, my Pocket Internet Explorer does not allow me to do that which is sacred…. Digg a story! (Update: You can Digg stories from within Diggriver.com on your Pocket IE, but you cannot see comments. Thanks to grendal.) Here are methods that allow you to get a better Digg.com experience on your Pocket PC.
First, by “full experience”, I mean being able to not only view stories, but digg them and make comments as well. So what is needed is a JavaScript capable browser so we can have some fun with AJAX.
Side Note: On Pocket IE, by default, you can not even see the comments. To solve that problem you must use the one column view or desktop view.
Menu->View->One Column Menu->View->Desktop
Here are five solutions: WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment, Opera, Netfront, Minimo and ThunderHawk.
1. Minimo
Summary: I suggest you start with this one and see if it fits your requirements, since it is free. You may not need to look at any other options.
Cost: Free
2. WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment
Summary: This is a Java Runtime by IBM that can be used within Pocket IE.
Cost: $25 at Handango.com
3. Opera
Summary: This one not only supports JavaScript, but it also has Flash support so you can watch the videos on Digg.
Cost: $24 from the Opera store.
4. Netfront
They have suspended downloads for now. You can keep track of their status here.
5. ThunderHawk
Summary: This solution relies on BitStream’s server and special fonts to reformat web pages on the fly.
Cost: $49.95 a year or $5.95 a month subscription through BitStream

What do you use to browse Digg.com on your Pocket PC? What has been your experience? I currently use Opera 8.6 and it does all that I need.

What is this dude talking about?
Diggriver.com on PIE, on my Moto Q has the ability to Digg stories.
Granted, I cannot see the comments, but I use the same Digg account to log in and the stories I did show as Dugg in both places.
