Ubuntu vs Linux
June 24, 2007 – 10:42 amOK, I am guilty. Instead of just saying Linux, I have been using Ubuntu everywhere in my articles. It’s as if I ran a global find and replace. I remember doing the same thing back in my Gentoo days…
Now it’s time for atonement, I call on all my Ubuntu brethren to stop using Ubuntu in their titles and instead use Ubuntu/Linux. That should be a good compromise. That way we can still promote the OS we love while still giving love to the Linux community as a whole.
I do believe in using the right tool for the job, and in some cases this rules out any flavor of Linux. That’s OK, freedom of choice is what it’s all about. I just want to help spread the word about the little OS that could…

What were doing is more correct than saying just Linux. Linux is a kernel while GNU/Linux is the operating system. Ubuntu and Gentoo are distributions of the GNU/Linux OS. Please read http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html.

Yes! This is why I’m saying use Ubuntu/Linux. Hopefully this will help those who are just getting started explore the other alternatives. Thanks for the link.

It’s better to point a layperson towards Ubuntu, rather than Linux. Newcomers will be turned away at the confusion of selecting the right distribution.
