Networkers say the darnest things…
June 22, 2007 – 7:25 pmBeing at a networking event last night reminded me of this. The very first time we attended the New Member Welcome Event at the Greater Riverside Chamber of Commerce, I met a very nice lady who owned her own business. As we were talking, she got more and more excited about our website, ThemBid.com, because of the added exposure she would get from registering her business. Then all of a sudden, the conversation turned from finding out about each other’s business to, “Are you single? I should introduce my daughter to you!” I must admit that it caught me off guard. I smiled nervously, then there was a long pause and luckily she said she was just kidding. Whew!
This might seem G-rated compared to what happened to me at my previous job.
I was making a follow-up call to a very nice real estate agent I had met while I was in Chicago. I was already back at the office in sunny San Diego. We were making small talk when I mentioned that San Diego was unusually warm during this winter. I told her that it was warm enough to wear shorts in the middle of December. Then she proceeds to tell me that it is freezing in Chicago with wind chills that make even your bone marrow cold. Then she tells me that she decided not to go outside that day to face the conditions and is instead laying in her bed in her birthday suit. Can we say awkward moment? There was a very long pause. I simply did not know what to say. She finally breaks the silence by saying, “but you probably didn’t need to know that.”
So, that’s my “Networkers say the darnest things” story.
I would love to hear other crazy things that have happened to you.
