Ubuntu: The Switch ( 2 of ? ) - First Steps

June 14, 2007 – 1:42 am

In the previous entry in this series I explained my motivations, current hardware setup, frequently used software and my overall goals. Now I will perform the first steps as outlined previously.

Back Up all Data and Settings

I will be formatting the hard drive so I will need to make sure that all the data I have on the machine is safely backed up. Fortunately about six months ago I started the practice of storing no files on a local computer. Everything is stored either on the web, on servers or external hard drives. I just needed to make sure there were no changes in my local SVN folder that needed to be committed and I synchronized my RoboForm data.

  2. Why emulate Outlook? T/bird is just as good.

  3. I mainly use Outlook for Calendar and Tasks. Mainly because it synchronizes with my Pocket PC. For mail I am using GMail.

  4. Filezilla can do SFTP

  5. It does not seem that Filezilla can handle SCP.

  7. Also no need to emulate outlook, the default mail client (evolution) supports calendar and tasks and pocket pc.

  8. Thanks leszek. I did not realize that evolution can work with my Pocket PC, that is excellent.

Do you recommend GFTP over Filezilla? If so, why?

  9. You might also find interesting that in the next version of Ubuntu (gutsy), using 2 monitors will be much easier:
