The Eight Step Goal Formula
June 13, 2007 – 8:29 amWhen we started developing ThemBid.com, we quickly found that there were many tasks to do between a few people. We needed to figure out what to do, why and in what order. Using the following formula can help you make these determinations.
- Determine what results you want to accomplish and describe what these final results should look like, in detail, when completed.
- For each result, define the purpose. Make sure this purpose is aligned with your company core values.
- For each result, set deadlines.
- For each result, create a list of all the actions that are necessary to complete. Brainstorming sessions with the stakeholders can be useful here. I recommend drawing out mind maps for each result.
- For each result, the actions should be organized by priority and sequence. I recommend that you use the Pareto Principle when determining priorities. To determine sequence, you must think about what tasks must be completed before other tasks can be started.
- Determine any obstacles that are impeding you from achieving these results. Work diligently to remove those obstacles immediately.
- Immediately take some kind of action towards your goal.
- Every day make progress towards your goal.
I also suggest that you have your goals located in a place where you will review them each day at morning at night. Visualize the end result consistently and get into the habit of physically rewriting your goals.
